From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash, Jr. experienced it all.
A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of
international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing
journey of self-discovery. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over his tragedy, and
finally - late in life - received the Nobel Prize.

A Jewish woman from Detroit who became a boxing manager, guiding several major careers. This film
focuses on her relationship with one boxer (Epps), who's reportedly a composite of several including
Toney, McKart and Hearns. Kallen eventually left her husband of 30 years, and moved to Los Angeles,
becoming the commissioner of the International Female Boxers Association...

Conquering 90% of the known world by the age of 25, Alexander the Great led his armies through
22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years. Coming out of tiny Macedonia (today part of
Greece), Alexander led his armies against the mighty Persian Empire, drove west to Egypt, and finally
made his way east to India. This film will concentrate on those eight years of battles, as well as his
relationship with his boyhood friend and battle mate, Hephaestion. Alexander died young, of illness, at
                    33. Alexander's conquests paved the way for the spread of Greek culture (facilitating the spread of
Christianity centuries later), and removed many of the obstacles that might have prevented the
expansion of the Roman Empire. In other words, the world we know today might never have been if not for
                    Alexander's bloody, yet unifying, conquest.

In 1964, a brash new pro boxer, fresh from his olympic gold medal victory, explodes on to the
scene, Cassius Clay. Bold and outspoken, he cuts an entirely new image for African Americans in sport
with his proud public self confidence with his unapologetic belief that he is the greatest boxer of all
time. To his credit, he sets out to prove that with his highly agile and forceful style soon making him
a formidable boxer who soon claims the heavyweight championship. His personal life is no less
noteworthy with his allegiance to the Nation of Islam, his friendship with the controversial Malcolm X
and his abandonment of his slave name in favour of Muhammad Ali stirring up controversy. Yet, at the
top of his game, both Ali's personal and professional lives face the ultimate test with the military
draft rules are changed, making him eligible for military induction during the Vietnam War. Despite the
fact that he could easily agree to a sweetheart deal that would have meant an easy tour of duty for
himself, Ali refuses to submit on principle to cooperate in an unjust war for a racist nation that
treated his people so poorly. The cost of that stand is high as he finds himself unable to legally box
in his own country while his case is contested in court. What follows is a battle for a man who would
sacrifice so much for what he believes in and a comeback that would cement his legend as one of the
great sports figures of all time.

brother will pay the debt soon. Johnny assigns his buddy Frankie to be Zach's minder, and they develop
a brotherly friendship. Zach parties with his captors as things begin to spin out of control. Group

Antonio Salieri believes that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music is divine and miraculous. He wishes
he was himself as good a musician as Mozart so that he can praise the Lord through composing. He began
his career as a devout man who believes his success and talent as a composer are God's rewards for his
piety. He's also content as the respected, financially well-off, court composer of Austrian Emperor
Joseph II. But he's shocked to learn that Mozart is such a vulgar creature, and can't understand why
God favored Mozart to be his instrument. Salieri's envy has made him an enemy of God whose greatness
was evident in Mozart. He is ready to take revenge against God and Mozart for his own musical
                    mediocrity.

In 1797, William Wilberforce, the great crusader for the British abolition of slavery, is taking a
vacation for his health even while he is sicker at heart for his frustrated cause. However, meeting the
charming Barbara Spooner, Wilberforce finds a soulmate to share the story of his struggle. With few
allies such as his mentor, John Newton, a slave ship captain turned repentant priest who penned the
great hymn, "Amazing Grace," Prime William Pitt, and Olaudah Equiano, the erudite former slave turned
author, Wilberforce fruitlessly fights both public indifference and moneyed opposition determined to
keep their exploitation safe. Nevertheless, Wilberforce finds the inspiration in newfound love to
rejuvenate the fight with new ideas that would lead to a great victory for social justice.

force with the Federal government. Based on a true story.

3.98 12-154 American Splendor DVD Like New; Very Good Other (unknown_aspect_ratio)
Harvey Pekar is file clerk at the local VA hospital. His interactions with his co-workers offer
some relief from the monotony, and their discussions encompass everything from music to the decline of
American culture to new flavors of jellybeans and life itself. At home, Harvey fills his days with
reading, writing and listening to jazz. His apartment is filled with thousands of books and LPs, and he
regularly scours Cleveland's thrift stores and garage sales for more, savoring the rare joy of a
25-cent find. It is at one of these junk sales that Harvey meets Robert Crumb, a greeting card artist
and music enthusiast. When, years later, Crumb finds international success for his underground comics,
the idea that comic books can be a valid art form for adults inspires Harvey to write his own brand of
comic book. An admirer of naturalist writers like Theodore Dreiser, Harvey makes his American Splendor
a truthful, unsentimental record of his working-class life, a warts-and-all self portrait. First
published in 1976, the comic earns Harvey cult fame throughout the 1980s and eventually leads him to

In 1979, the American embassy in Iran was invaded by Iranian revolutionaries and several Americans
were taken hostage. However, six managed to escape to the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador
and the CIA was ordered to get them out of the country. With few options, exfiltration expert Tony
Mendez devised a daring plan: create a phony Canadian film project looking to shoot in Iran and smuggle
the Americans out as its production crew. With the help of some trusted Hollywood contacts, Mendez
created the ruse and proceeded to Iran as its associate producer. However, time was running out with
the Iranian security forces closing in on the truth while both his charges and the White House had
grave doubts about the operation themselves.

In 1965, Bob Crane, who had achieved some earlier success as a television supporting actor, was
working as a successful morning radio DJ at KNX Los Angeles. Despite enjoying his work, photography
(especially of the female form) and drumming, Crane wanted to be a movie star. So it was with some
reluctance that he accepted the title starring role in a new television sitcom called Hogan's Heroes
(1965), a WWII POW comedy. To his surprise, the show became a hit and catapulted him to television
stardom. The fame resulting from the show led to excesses and a meeting with home video salesman and
technician John Carpenter, with who he would form a friendship based on their mutual interests, namely
excessive sex (for Crane, purely heterosexual sex) and capturing nude females on celluloid. His fame
allowed Crane to have as much sex as he wanted, which was incongruent to his somewhat wholesome
television friendly image, and the way he portrayed himself to almost everyone except Carpenter and his
extramarital sex partners. His sex addiction was somewhat known but ignored by his high school
sweetheart/first wife Anne Crane nee Terzian, but well known by his second wife, Patti Olson, better
known as Sigrid Valdis, his Hogan's Heroes co-star. Especially after the end of Hogan's Heroes in 1971,
this incongruence and his friendship with Carpenter, with who he would have a continuing love/hate
relationship, would contribute to both his professional and personal downfall.

The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees
a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly
unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed
husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisley, nephew to the
very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But
when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the
sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. Now, the
couple, whose flirtation flies in the face of the sense and sensibility of the age, is faced with a
terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends
                    and fortune.

Consummate entertainer Bobby Darin (1936-1973) is making a movie about his life. He's volatile,
driven by the love of performing, ambition, perfectionism, and belief that he's living on borrowed
time. He begins in the Bronx: a fatherless lad learning music and dance from his mom. His career starts
slowly, then "Splish Splash" puts him at the top of the charts and on "Bandstand." He wants to be an
entertainer, not a pop star, so he aims for the Copacabana; then it's on to the movies, where he meets
and marries Sandra Dee. After, it's balancing career, health, marriage and family life, balances he
doesn't always keep. Throughout, conversations with his boyhood self give him perspective.

Famed writer Truman Capote, southern born and bred but now part of the New York City social circle,
is growing weary of his current assignment of writing autobiographical type pieces for the New Yorker.
After reading a newspaper article about the just occurred November 14, 1959 cold blooded murders of the
Clutter family in their rural Kansas home, Truman feels compelled to write about that event as his next
article. So he and his personal assistant Nelle Harper Lee, also a southern born New Yorker and an
aspiring writer of her own, head to Kansas to research the story first-hand. Truman hopes to use his
celebrity status to gain access to whomever he needs, such as to Laura Kinney, a friend of the Clutter
daughter she who discovered the bodies, and to Alvin Dewey, the lead police investigator and also a
Clutter family friend. If his celebrity doesn't work, Truman will grease the wheels by whatever means
necessary. When the police eventually charge suspects, two young men named Dick Hickcock and Perry
Smith, Truman uses those same tactics to gain access to them. Truman's fascination with the story makes
him believe that he can revolutionize writing by expanding the germ of the article into what he calls a
non-fiction novel. His personal involvement also changes as he grows emotionally attached to Perry, the
seemingly sensitive and thus probable submissive in the criminal pairing, thus Truman becoming part of
the story itself. Article or non-fiction novel, Truman knows that he has to take it to its natural
conclusion, something which he cannot force. But also missing are the details of the November 14, 1959
event itself, something that neither Dick or Perry have divulged even in testimony.

Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship
Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens
                    - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of
globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain
Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse
(Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course
when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali

                    the LAPD to initiate a search. Five months later, a boy is found in Illinois who fits the description;
he says he's her son. To fanfare and photos, the LAPD reunite mother and son, but she insists he's not
her boy. The cops dismiss her as either a liar or hysterical. When she joins a minister in his public
criticism of the police, they in turn use government power to silence and intimidate her. Meanwhile, a
cop goes to a dilapidated ranch to find a Canadian lad who's without legal status; the youth tells a
grisly tale. There's redress for murder; is there redress for abuse of power?

During the Great Depression, a common-man hero, James J. Braddock--a.k.a. the Cinderella Man--was
to become one of the most surprising sports legends in history. By the early 1930s, the impoverished
ex-prizefighter was seemingly as broken-down, beaten-up and out-of-luck as much of the rest of the
American populace who had hit rock bottom. His career appeared to be finished, he was unable to pay the
bills, the only thing that mattered to him--his family--was in danger, and he was even forced to go on
Public Relief. But deep inside, Jim Braddock never relinquished his determination. Driven by love,
honor and an incredible dose the ones who are do of grit, he willed an impossible dream to come true.
In a last-chance bid to help his family, Braddock returned to the ring. No one thought he had a shot.
However Braddock, fueled by something beyond mere competition, kept winning. Suddenly, the ordinary
working man became the mythic athlete. Carrying the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised on his

master grows, so does his pride. After an ill-advised fight leads to another master's death, members of
Huo's family are slain in revenge. Grieving and ashamed, Huo wanders the country in shock. Near death,
he is rescued by women from an idyllic village, and is offered simple kindness and generosity that help
him heal and regain his equilibrium over a period of several years. Huo realizes that the future of
martial arts lies in sportsmanship and not brutality, and he rejoins society to apply what he has
learned. Returning to Tianjin, Huo takes steps to come to terms with his past and restore his family's
name. His evolving, graceful Mizong (Missing) Fist method of fighting brings Huo renewed success, and
he forms the progressive Jingwu Sports Federation. Taking note, duplicitous members of the Foreign
Chamber of Commerce engineer a Shanghai tournament pitting Huo against four fighters, each representing
the major foreign powers in China. Huo commits to the bout and faces off against, respectively, a
British boxer, a Spanish swordsman, a Belgian soldier, and a Japanese martial artist. What happened
that day in 1910 has never been, and will never be, forgotten in China.

Later he is arrested dealing drugs and sentenced to thirty years in prison. The prosecutor Sean Kierney
proposes a deal to Jackie, immediately releasing him if he testifies against the Lucchese family and
other mafia families but Jackie does not accept to rat his friends that he loves. When the trial
begins, he asks the judge Finestein to defend himself without the assistance of a lawyer.

1903 London. Renowned playwright J.M. Barrie (James)'s latest effort has garnered less than
positive reviews, something he knew would be the case even before the play's mounting. This failure
places pressure on James to write another play quickly as impresario Charles Frohman needs another to
replace the failure to keep his theater viable. Out for a walk with his dog in part to let his creative
juices flow, James stumbles upon the Llewelyn Davies family: recently widowed Sylvia Llewelyn Davies
(the daughter of now deceased author George L. Du Maurier) and her four adolescent sons. James and the
family members become friends, largely based on he and the boys being able to foster in each other the
imagination of children, James just being the biggest among them in this regard. Sylvia also welcomes
James into their lives, he who becomes an important and integral part of it. Among the six of them, the
only one who does not want to partake is Sylvia's third, Peter Llewelyn Davies, who is still grieving
the reality of their lives, where his father was there one day planning an outing for the family, and
gone the next. Two other people who don't appreciate James in the Llewelyn Davies' lives are: his wife,
Mary Barrie, who always feels the need to be the responsible one in their relationship and who feels
threatened by his friendship with an unmarried woman; and Emma du Maurier, Sylvia's overbearing mother,
who sees him as an obstacle to Sylvia moving on with her life with another potential husband, and an
impediment to maintaining discipline within the boys. James still hopes to bring Peter out of his
self-imposed shell, but in the process comes up with an idea for another play based on an amalgam of
himself and Peter, that play which eventually becomes what Charles sees as a largely unmountable and
thus doomed production called "Peter Pan". This process of helping Peter could take a step backward
when it looks like Sylvia may imminently befall a similar fate to that of her late husband.

It's 1994 in Long Beach, California. Idealistic Erin Gruwell is just starting her first teaching
job, that as freshman and sophomore English teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School, which, two years
earlier, implemented a voluntary integration program. For many of the existing teachers, the
integration has ruined the school, whose previously stellar academic standing has been replaced with
many students who will be lucky to graduate or even be literate. Despite choosing the school on purpose
because of its integration program, Erin is unprepared for the nature of her classroom, whose students
live by generations of strict moral codes of protecting their own at all cost. Many are in gangs and
almost all know somebody that has been killed by gang violence. The Latinos hate the Cambodians who
hate the blacks and so on. The only person the students hate more is Ms. Gruwell. It isn't until Erin
holds an unsanctioned discussion about a recent drive-by shooting death that she fully begins to
understand what she's up against. And it isn't until she provides an assignment of writing a daily
journal - which will be not graded, and will remain unread by her unless they so choose - that the
students begin to open up to her. As Erin tries harder and harder to have resources provided to teach
properly (which often results in her needing to pay for them herself through working second and third
jobs), she seems to face greater resistance, especially from her colleagues, such as Margaret Campbell,
her section head, who lives by regulations and sees such resources as a waste, and Brian Gelford, who
will protect his "priviledged" position of teaching the senior honors classes at all cost. Erin also
finds that her teaching job is placing a strain on her marriage to Scott Casey, a man who seems to have
lost his own idealistic way in life.

"Frida" chronicles the life Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera, as the
young couple took the art world by storm. From her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor
and husband to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic
entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic,
                    and sexual revolutionary.

Writer Peter Morgan's legendary battle between Richard Nixon, the disgraced president with a legacy
to save, and David Frost, a jet-setting television personality with a name to make, in the story of the
historic encounter that changed both their lives. For three years after being forced from office, Nixon
remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for
one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal
that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor,
intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of
Americans (as well as a $600,000 fee). Likewise, Frost's team harbored doubts about their boss' ability
to hold his own. But as cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted.

Held yearly for centuries, the Ocean of Fire--a 3,000 mile survival race across the Arabian
desert--was a challenge restricted to the finest Arabian horses ever bred, the purest and noblest
lines, owned by the greatest royal families. In 1890, a wealthy sheik invited an American, Frank T.

Struggling private investigator Louis Simo treats his work more as a means to make a living than a
want to do right by what few clients he has. Through connections with the investigation firm for which
he used to work, Simo is hired by Helen Bessolo to investigate the death of her son, actor George
Reeves. Reeves was best known for his title role in Adventures of Superman (1952), a role which he
always despised, in part since it typecast him as a "cartoon", despite it bringing him a certain fame.
His June 16, 1959 death by a single gunshot wound while in his bedroom in his Los Angeles home was
ruled a suicide by the police, the death which occurred when the house was filled with people. Reeves'

high-profile investigation, he learns that someone doesn't want him snooping around. Through the
process, Simo evaluates his own professional and personal life, the latter of which includes a somewhat
strained relationship with his wife and son.

During the 1990s, some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind took place in the country
of Rwanda--and in an era of high-speed communication and round the clock news, the events went almost
unnoticed by the rest of the world. In only three months, one million people were brutally murdered. In
the face of these unspeakable actions, inspired by his love for his family, an ordinary man summons
extraordinary courage to save the lives of over a thousand helpless refugees, by granting them shelter
                    in the hotel he manages.

Sidney Young is a disillusioned intellectual who both adores and despises the world of celebrity,

and bucks trends, and so when Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York

Biopic of J. Edgar Hoover told by Hoover as he recalls his career for a biography. Early in his
career, Hoover fixated on Communists, anarchists and any other revolutionary taking action against the
U.S. government. He slowly builds the agency's reputation, becoming the sole arbiter of who gets hired

Hoover's confidant and companion for the rest of Hoover's life. Hoover's memories have him playing a

the arrest of bank robbers like John Dillinger - and also show him to be quite adept at manipulating
the various politicians he's worked with over his career, thanks in large part to his secret files.

Joan of Arc is born in 1412 in the village of Domremy in the war zone of Northern France. During
her youth she often witnesses the horrors of war, but her spirit is kept high by the legend of the
Maiden of Lorraine. This says that a young maiden one day will unite the divided country and lead the
people to freedom. 11 years old she starts hearing voices from Saint Catherine and Archangel Michael.
Through them she is commissioned by God to go to Prince Charles in Chinon, to convince him to become
the King of France and drive the English occupants away. Charles thinks that Joan could be the catalyst
that animates his disheartened troops. He commissions her to lead the army together with captain La
Hire. After their victory at Orleans Joan participates in the coronation of Charles in Reims. Bishop
Cauchon accuses her of heresy, and is relocated to Northern France, where he associates with the
English occupants. Joan breaks Charles treaty with Burgundy by attacking Paris. Her troops are
defeated, and Charles betrays her by letting the Burgundians capture her. They hand her over to their
English allies, who put her on a trial led by bishop Cauchon. The court sentences her to be burned at
                    the stake as a heretic.

Called Prok as an adult (short for Professor Kinsey), Alfred Kinsey has been interested in biology
since he was a child growing up in the early twentieth century, despite the criticisms of such being
evil nonsense from his overbearing and devoutly Christian father, professor Alfred Seguine Kinsey. Prok
goes on to become a biology professor at Indiana University, initially focusing on the study of gall
wasps. But those studies in combination with questions from his students, coming to terms with the
needs of sex with his own wife, a former student of his named Clara McMillen (who he calls Mac), and
what he sees as the gross misinformation on the subject currently within popular belief makes him
change his focus to human sexuality. Many of those gross untruths - as he sees them - are that oral sex
and masturbation cause a slew of maladies, which are perpetuated by what is presented in the
university's hygiene class taught by Professor Thurman Rice. With the approval of faculty head Herman
Wells, Prok starts teaching his own wildly popular marriage course, talking about sex in a
straightforwardly academic fashion. When he sees that morals don't necessarily mirror sexual behavior,
he decides to conduct a massive sex survey with the assistance of students Wardell Pomeroy, Clyde
Martin and Paul Gebhard. He faces the issue of the funding required for the survey and public and
political response to this controversial and oft seen as taboo subject. But in conducting the survey,
he and Mac also face the issue of their own sexuality in relationship to their marriage and the
emotional and cultural aspects behind it, such as the notion of love.

Man on the Moon is a biographical movie on the late comedian Andy Kaufman. Kaufman, along with his
role on Taxi (1978), was famous for being the self-declared Intergender Wrestling Champion of the
world. After beating women time and time again, Jerry Lawler (who plays himself in the movie), a
professional wrestler, got tired of seeing all of this and decided to challenge Kaufman to a match. In
most of the matches the two had, Lawler prevailed with the piledriver, which is a move by spiking an
opponent head-first into the mat. One of the most famous moments in this feud was in the early 80s when
Kaufman threw coffee on Lawler on Late Night with David Letterman (1982), got into fisticuffs with
Lawler, and proceeded to sue NBC.

"All eyes will be on you," says the Austrian Empress, Maria Theresa to her youngest daughter Marie
Antoinette. The film, marketed for a teen audience, is an impressionistic retelling of Marie
Antoinette's life as a young queen in the opulent and eccentric court at Versailles. The film focuses
on Marie Antoinette, as she matures from a teenage bride to a young woman and eventual queen of France.

The story ultimately revolves around two "men of honor"; their relationship, their individual and
joint failures and triumphs. Carl Brashear is determined to be the first African American Navy Diver in
a time where racism is rife. Leslie Sunday is his embittered trainer, determined to see him fail. Fate,

film traces Harvey Milk's career from his 40th birthday to his death. He leaves the closet and New
York, opens a camera shop that becomes the salon for San Francisco's growing gay community, and
organizes gays' purchasing power to build political alliances. He runs for office with lover Scott

conservative district. The rest of the film sketches Milk's relationship with White and the 1978 fight
against a statewide initiative to bar gays and their supporters from public school jobs.

with Charles Grey, a rising young Whig politician. However, despite his ongoing liaison with Lady Bess,

reconnect in London. She's working as a singer whilst he's churning out scripts for government

something different, not to mention dangerous. Romantic turmoil continues in Vera's life. She marries
her devoted admirer William Killick, but she can't deny the chemistry between herself and Dylan, nor
does she want to - even if this means betraying Caitlin. When William is posted abroad, and a pregnant
Vera returns to Wales with her married friends, the battle between her heart and head becomes more
intense. William returns a changed man, but neither is Vera the carefree cabaret girl he married.

Canadian mentors read his book and are convinced of his innocence enough to work for his exoneration.
However, what Hurricane and his friends learn is that this fight puts them against a racist
establishment that profited from this travesty and have no intention of seeing it reversed.

assist in a rural hospital. Once there, he soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin, who promises
a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who
soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest
advisers. However as the years pass, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin's increasingly erratic
behavior that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity that is driving

home, Garrigan must make some crucial decisions that could mean his death if the despot finds out.

In 1660, with the return of Charles II to the English throne, theater, the visual arts, science and
sexual promiscuity flourish. Thirteen years later, in the midst of political and economical problems,
Charles II asks for the return of his friend John Wilmot, aka the second Earl of Rochester, from exile
back to London. John is a morally-corrupt drunkard and a sexually- active cynical poet. When the King
asks John to prepare a play for the French ambassador so as to please him, John meets the aspiring
actress Elizabeth Barry in the playhouse and decides to make her into a great star. He falls in love
with her and she becomes his mistress. During the presentation to the Frenchman, he falls into disgrace
with the court. When he was thirty-three years old and dying of syphilis and alcoholism, he converts to
                    being a religious man.

The professional and personal life of actor and comedian Peter Sellers was a turbulent one. His
early movie fame was based primarily on his comic characterizations, often of bumbling and
foreign-accented persons, characters which he embodied. As his movie fame rose, he began to lose his
own personal identity to his movie characters, leading to self-doubt of himself as a person and a
constant need for reassurance and acceptance of his work. This self-doubt manifested itself in fits of
anger and what was deemed as arrogance by many. In turn, his personal relationships began to
deteriorate as his characterizations were continually used to mask his problems. His first wife, Anne
Howe, left/divorced him and his relationships with his parents and children became increasingly
distant. His relationship with his second wife, Swedish actress Britt Ekland, was based on this mask.
In his later life, he tried to rediscover himself and his career with what would become his penultimate
film role, that of Chance in Being There (1979).

Captain Smith is spared his mutinous hanging sentence after captain Newport's ship arrives in 1607
to found Jamestown, an English colony in Virginia. The initially friendly natives, who have no personal
property concept, turn hostile after a 'theft' is 'punished' violently on the spot. During an armed
exploration, Smith is captured, but spared when the chief's favorite daughter Pocahontas pleads for the
stranger who soon becomes her lover and learns to love their naive 'savage' way of harmonious life.
Ultimately he returns to the grim fort, which would starve hadn't she arranged for Indian generosity.
Alas, each side soon brands their own lover a traitor, so she is banished and he flogged as
introduction to slavish toiling. Changes turn again, leading Smith to accept a northern-more mission
and anglicized Pocahontas, believing him dead, becoming the mother of aristocratic new lover John
Rolfe's son. They'll meet again for a finale in England.
